Memories are, in large part, what makes you who you are. Your personality is based on your memories. Memories are responsible for creating the emotional references that you use over and over again in order to know how to feel about the events that happen in your life. Memories are what give rise to beliefs and expectations about the future. Memories are so important that we believe them to be real. However, memories are not real. Memories are a function of the imagination. The memories you have may be based on actual events that did happen to you, but those events are no longer real.
How many traumatic, painful, fearful or otherwise negative memories do you carry around with you?If you have been hurt by someone or have had some traumatic experience, it may seem like that memory is very real for you. It seems that way because you feel it. Whatever you feel to be true in the moment is going to be true for you. But the truth is that memories are not real, they are just your imagination. When you bring a memory to conscious awareness and really feel it strongly, it is going to seem real and it is going to have a real effect on your life. In fact it is the negatively charged memories that have had the most impact in your life. They are the memories that hold you back from achieving what you desire. They are the memories that keep you repeating self-destructive and self-defeating patterns over and over again. You can do positive affirmations and visualizations all day long for weeks at a time, but unless you clear out those negatively charged memories and the corresponding limiting beliefs, you will never achieve what you consciously desire. You will remain a slave to your unconscious programming that these memories have created for you.
One thing I repeat over and over is that only NOW is real. Even though it can be said that physical reality is an illusion, one that is created by our mind based on sensory information, that illusion is our bedrock reality. In other words, what we experience with our senses on a moment to moment basis, is our most fundamental reality. Any thoughts or memories you experience are not part of this most fundamental reality. They are in fact creations of your imagination. However, even though memories, thoughts and fantasies are created by your imagination and not strictly real, they do have a real effect on you and your life when you consciously focus on them with emotional intensity in the moment. What you experience in the moment is real for you. That experience can be based on focusing on your momentary awareness of your senses, which is in fact the closest we come to true reality. Or your experience of the moment can be focused on feeling your thoughts, memories or other imaginings, which though not strictly real can and do have a powerful effect on the kinds of experiences you attract to yourself in your life.
The two videos below talk a bit more about this and gives you some tips on how to clear those negative memories from your mind.
